The scourge of spam and how to tackle it

We’ve all been there. It’s the start of the day and you’re sifting through loads of Spam emails. All you want to do is get straight to the genuine emails.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could spend less time sifting through and deleting all that Spam?

The spammers are continually coming up with ingenious ways to get past the filters so these solutions are never going to be 100% effective. But they do work and can mean you spend less time filtering your emails.

There are also downsides to using spam filters. Just like we humans they can make mistakes! What this means is spam filters can sometimes trap genuine emails. This is known as a “false positive”. That’s not great if it’s an important email from a client.

Clearly there needs to be a balance here between risk and reward. This is normally in the form of a sensitivity setting within the spam filter. It is important to get this correct but initially it is worth trialling different settings and checking the results.

Some spam filters work in a slightly different way by blocking any emails they are not sure about but then giving the recipient the option to release that email. That puts you in control of your own sensitivity settings and means that you literally “train” your Spam filter. This might mean a bit of extra effort on your part at the outset but it may well save you time longer term and enable you to get the best out of your Spam filter.

One option is to use a Spam filter that is hosted on the internet with no software to install on your computer. This has several advantages:
1. The Spam emails never reach your computer. That leaves your internet connection free for valid emails and internet use.
2. Viruses never reach your computer or server.
3. It also makes your network or server more secure as you can set them to only allow connections from your hosted Spam filter rather than anybody who might be sending you emails.

My recommendation would be for a hosted spam filtering solution for the benefits listed above. There are also additional benefits including business continuity. When your server/network is down you can still access emails through a web interface and then when your network/server is working again the emails are delivered as normal. There’s also the option of email archiving for compliance reasons along with access from any location though a web site, for example if you are away from the office.

Remember the days of 40MG hard drives? Or how excited you were when you had a Gig of disk space on your laptop? Yet now we can travel with 1/2 TB of space on a flash drive smaller than a paperback. Technical advances and dropping prices allow us to give users what they want—more space to store their stuff. But as George Carlin pointed out in his famous stand-up routine about Stuff, some challenges can result. Read on to find out what we are seeing as we visit customers, plus some great solutions to help.

The Challenge:

We are living in the information age and data is king. Users want rapid access to their data and don’t want to have to worry about losing an important document or email that they might need ‘some day.’ In a society where discovery for court cases has extended to electronic documents, penalties can be high for not being able to produce the right document. As we visit customers, we see both file system and email stores growing out of control. It seemed to happen overnight and everyone is talking about it. So why not just keep adding disk space? After all, as we stated above, disk space is cheap and easy to come by. However, some serious challenges arise from simply adding disk space to disk space:

1. Backup Windows Are Extended: Depending on your particular rotation strategy, some backups may be finishing just as your users are logging back into the network.

2. Maintenance Takes Longer: If you do have a hardware or software issue, rebuilds of large data volumes (such as NSS pool rebuilds) can take a great deal of time and put your systems out of production, thus impacting user and business functions.

3. Data Migrations Take Longer: While we can do seed and delta copies when migrating to new hardware, all of these take longer and longer as our stores grow.

Some Solutions:

There are many ways to solve this situation – all revolving around reducing the size of your production data stores and putting less-recently-used files and data off to cheaper devices that need to be backed up less frequently. Here are three options to consider:

1. Email Archiver: While email archivers were originally used to capture all emails in the event of a court case, they are also a great way to reduce the size of your post offices. The advantage is that users have the comfort of knowing that the data is still available if they need it, and thus are less likely to complain about archiving and retention policies. Solutions like Messaging Architects M+ Archive support stubbing, so users ‘see’ the email as if it were in their mailbox.

2. Dynamic Storage Technology: Included with OES, DST allows users to create a shadow volume and move less-frequently-used files off to cheaper storage based on the policies you set. Users see the files as if they were still on the same volume. When they access them, the files are automatically moved back to the production disk. The cheaper storage can be backed up less frequently and at a time that is convenient for you. Plus, you reduce the size of your production data volume.

3. Novell Storage Manager: Novell Storage Manager allows you to create storage limitations for various groups and automatically move files to the storage device of your choosing – all based on the policies you define. The program snaps into eDirectory. It is great for schools who are moving student files to new directories based on class enrollment. It also permits or prevents the storage of certain files based on groups; for example, you can pre-determine to only let your music class students and faculty store MP3s.

Like any other implementation, planning for the needs of your organization is key. But by selecting a few of these strategies, you can find a place for everyone’s ‘stuff’ and still keep your network running at top speed!

Another chapter in the email archiving story was written with the arrival of two new laws onto the UK statute book.

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 (“FOIA”) came into force on 1st January 2005 and gave the public new rights of access to recorded information held by public authorities – and email is considered part of that ‘recorded information’. Anyone can ask for a copy of an email and the deadline for response is just 20 working days from the date of receipt of the request. It’s a deadline that many public authorities are struggling to meet because their existing email applications – more and more are realizing that the only way forward is to move to an email archive facility with advanced research, retrieval and management functionality. Public Authorities are also expected to comply with a statutory code on records management that was issued under the FOIA – the s46 Code. The Code requires all public bodies to treat the records management function “as a specific corporate programme”. The Code emphasises that electronic records, including emails, should be managed with the same care accorded to manual records, and that the records management programme, “should bring together responsibilities for records in all formats, including electronic records, throughout their life cycle, from planning and creation through to ultimate disposal.”

The Data Protection Act 1998 (“DPA”) applies to the private and public sector alike and like the FOIA has asked many questions of those with a less than robust approach to ESI.

The DPA gives individuals the right, on producing evidence of their identity, to have a copy of personal data held about them. The deadline for compliance in this instance is 40 days and the retrieved information has to be further assessed to remove any third party data that shouldn’t be disclosed. Organisations recovering personal data from email records are only entitled to charge £10 so there is both a compliance and cost angle to ensuring that requested emails can be retrieved as quickly and effortlessly as possible.

The DPA also requires organisations to take appropriate technical and organisational measures to prevent unauthorized or unlawful processing of personal data, and against accidental loss or destruction of personal data. As regards email, this means that access to any email system and related storage device should be controlled and its contents kept safe – an encrypted, secure archive is the obvious solution, providing the necessary controls while also acting as an essential backup for the preservation of data should the main system fail.

Ultimately, effective email management comes down to mitigating risk. What links all of the above is that organizations are only vulnerable if they have not put in place proper procedures, frameworks and technologies. If they know what they have and where it is, and can assess, search or retrieve it easily, accurately and responsively, then compliance holds no fear. It also puts them on the front foot when it comes to those rather more everyday issues of employee discipline or dismissal or contract breaches. Without the ability to produce reliable information from emails, and build a full audit trail, an employer or plaintiff may find his position seriously undermined or weakened at any resultant Tribunal or court action.

CIOs can already make a strong case for email archiving on technical and operational grounds alone. But if there is any doubt whether a business should adopt such a discipline, then the head of legal should also make his voice heard. A centralized, consolidated, fully managed email archive is not just a ticket to efficiency and cost control – it’s a passport to best practice, lawful compliance and corporate confidence.

The cliché of a errant click on an e-mail attachment is well covered territory, but like most clichés there’s an element of truth. An e-mail delivered virus taking down corporate computer systems is a reality in the 21st century. Access controls that prevent software installation and web browser security settings can help, but securing e-mail is a trickier proposition.

Securing the weakest link

E-mail by its very nature is one of the weakest links in your corporate IT security. Unsecured mail servers are routinely hijacked by overseas spam artists, creating havoc and leaving the unaware owners liable. Viruses, worms, and Trojans are hidden in mail attachments, causing disruptions and downtime and, in the worst cases, stealing confidential company and customer data. E-mail can also be used in denial of service type attacks, overwhelming servers with unwanted traffic.

Combating spam is made difficult by the ubiquitous nature of e-mail. Traditionally administrators have had to straddle the line between inconveniencing legitimate users and preventing exploitable loopholes for hackers. Hosted Microsoft Exchange puts an end to that stalemate, giving users convenient, easy to use e-mail while stopping 94% of spam in its tracks.

A gated community for corporate e-mail

Hosted Exchange is the equivalent of a gated community for your company e-mail. Onsite administrators update spam filters and definitions regularly. Spam is quarantined and eliminated before it reaches employees. Viruses and other malicious software are scanned and intercepted before they can spread to company computers.

There are a number of other significant benefits that come from a hosted Exchange service. Mail retention and archival is automatic, and with powerful search capabilities to help you find the mail you need. Exchange centralizes your mail, giving your employees access from anywhere using any browser capable device, and built in ActiveSync support for iPhone and Blackberry smart phones keeps everyone happy.

Hassle free spam protection

When it comes to dealing with spam, managed hosted Exchange is as close as it gets to a set it and forget it solution. Superior spam protection increases productivity and helps prevent potentially catastrophic outages from viruses and other malware. Hosted Exchange delivers cost effective, centralized, spam free e-mail for your entire organization.

Our lives are becoming increasingly decluttered; bulky videos have been replaced with slim line DVDs, digital cameras have replaced film cameras and video recorders, mobile phones have replaced all of the above, and, Flickr has replaced family photo albums. Some bits and bobs in our lives, however, don’t come neatly packaged in a minimalistic fancy box or can be carried around on a little USB and which carry a higher value than any camera, iPod or mobile phone could. Baby’s hospital bands, wedding certificates, spur of the moment photo booth pictures, concert tickets, your child’s first painting, etc the list goes on… all these pieces of paper, pictures, photographs and memories remain locked away in a shoebox stuffed under a bed eventually to be discarded during some mad spring clean, or they will end up lost… as so much of our memories always do.

If these items, which to others are no doubt completely pointless, carry great meaning and you are like many joining the minimalist regime and/or are just simply scared you lose those moment captured in a single object or picture forever, then preserve them by, like everything else in our modern lives, digitalising them.

Although you cannot exactly digitalise the first teddy you ever got from your husband; you can scan in your wedding pictures or your child’s first test results. Anything that hold value to you that is in paper form you can capture inside your computer and treasure forever.

Having your memories in digital format also allows you to share them with other, whether it be by email or social networking sites, you have the ability to show someone a thousand miles away your first ever ticket to see the Rolling Stones. The preservation and sharing of memories is not the only benefit of scanning documents; the ability to send important documents through email is more efficient than photocopying and posting.

WinZip (A Useful tool): While working on the computer system, in almost every type of set up, you surely would find the need to use WinZip software some or the other time to compress large sized files. This helps in speedy transfer of data via emails and other modes like online chat. You can also transfer huge & bulky files/folders quickly from one system to another using USB or other storage drives with the help of this compression facility, which saves your time greatly. The process of zipping and unzipping the files/folders is very quick and highly secure. Moreover, this also saves your download time and even helps in encrypting and decrypting documents containing sensitive information.

Zip Files: The compressed files, formed using WinZip software, generally have .ZIP extension. These Zip files mainly use MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) media type application or Zip.

Corruption (Errors Observed in Zip Files): Due to some internet problems, you can observe certain errors in your Zip files, which generally occur while downloading these Zip files, leads to their corruption. As a result, the data stored in these Zip files can become inaccessible to you.

A Possible Scenario: Imagine a situation, where you tried to open a .Zip file after downloading it from a MS Windows SharePoint Services document library and you get an error message stating: “Cannot open file: it does not appear to be a valid archive. If you downloaded this file, try downloading the file again.” You Zip file data become inaccessible after this error message appears.

Possible Cause: The abovementioned situation may occur when the HTTP compression is turned on in the Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) Web Sites properties on the SharePoint virtual server. Consequently, when you download the Zip file, IIS encodes it as GZIP and the browser client forwards it directly to the unZip program, without GZIP decoding the file.

Restore from Backup (A Solution to the Problem): If you are experiencing such problem of data inaccessibility due to corrupted Zip files, then there is a way you can get back your data and i.e. by restoring the data from a recent backup file. However, if you had forgotten to create or never maintained a backup or your backup also has got corrupted, then in that problematic scenario, you can get a third-party Zip File Repair Tool to repair damage Zip file.

Zip Repair Tool: You can repair Zip files using an outside Zip Repair Tool. SysTools Zip Repair software is an efficient tool that you can easily use to fix Zip file error. The software incorporates very powerful scanning algorithms to fix Zip files and to ensure complete recovery of your Zip file data.

Looking for other affiliate marketing tutorials and resources? Try our archives

With the proliferation of goods and services now available on the Internet, advertisers look to individuals and companies to help sell their products by utilizing webmasters and others to spread the word.

This can be in the form of banner advertising on affiliate sites, text links, reviews written by affiliates, direct email etc. The advertisers compensate webmasters by paying them for displaying the ads, or for click throughs sent to them, or (as is most common these days) a commission on sales resulting as a referral from their web site or for more details visit to www.affiliate-manager-pro.com email message. For a more detailed look at the getting involved with affiliate programs, view the learning resources and tutorial links at the end of this article.
Recommended affiliate management software
Used and recommended by Michael – Post Affiliate Pro.
Special price: $149 only $99! Amazing range of features, quick and easy to implement!
Read my review
How can I make money from being an affiliate?

There are many thousands of affiliate programs out there, all claiming to be the best. Some of them will give you the impression that all you have to do is implement their banners and links and wait for the commission checks to start rolling in. This CAN be the case, for more details visit to www.affiliate-manager-pro.com but this scenario usually only applies to very large sites with massive web traffic that is relevant to product or service on offer. For most of us, being a successful affiliate requires a little more work!

As the range of goods and online services offered via the Internet has grown at an incredible rate over the last few years, therefore so has the competition. Web site visitors need to have a very good reason for clicking on a link or banner.
Choosing the right banners

In most affiliate programs, you are offered a wide variety of banners to place on your site – very few of them will be effective. If you can attain a click through rate of 2%, then you are doing very well. It has been our experience, and this is generally speaking, that graphically rich banners do not perform as successfully as their simpler counterparts. The main reason for this is download time. If a banner is the last thing to load on your page and the banner ad is excessively byte “heavy”, by the time it has loaded your visitor may already have scrolled down the page – missing it entirely. Heavy banner ads can also slow down the loading of your pages, or critical elements of your page and you can lose your visitors altogether! A graphically rich banner can also confuse the actual message – the artwork and marketing blurb can be imbalanced. For these reasons, we suggest that banners you implement be no more that 15kb wherever possible.

Banners that have “extreme” animation, such as rapid flashing, are also something to consider very carefully. While these do achieve high clickthrough rates, they are also highly annoying. If you do decide to implement this form of banner advertising, use it very sparingly.

When selecting any form of graphical advertising, try and keep the theme of your site in mind – while graphical ads are meant to stand out and catch a visitors eye, it shouldn’t be to the point that everything else on the page is totally ignored. Wherever possible, ensure that all banner ads (and any advertising for that matter) uses a link that opens in a new window. That way, if a visitor does choose to visit one of your advertisers it is easy for them to return to your page and review what they actually came to your site for!
Pop ups and pop unders

Many companies, but mostly agencies representing a number of advertisers, now give their affiliates the options of using pop up and pop under ads. Our opinion – pop ups are evil. They annoy visitors and are usually closed before they even have a chance to load. Go for pop-unders and preferably those that only display once per visit. See below for further articles on this subject.
Using Text Link Ads.

One of the most successful forms of advertising are text link ads. They are bandwidth friendly, don’t take up a lot of space and can be easily implemented into most page layouts. Good text links ads don’t just scream “buy me!”, they also offer some information as to why your web site visitor should investigate the offer. A company should also supply you with very short text links which only state the product or company name. The reason for this is so that you can implement the links directly into the content of related articles and reviews.
Articles and product/service reviews

Now, this is where a bit of hard work comes in. Your regular site visitors will view you as an authority on particular subjects, so why not write a review on a product or service you are advertising? This also supplies excellent content for search engine spiders to latch onto. We have attracted many visitors to our site using what I call “adarticles”.
But there’s a catch……

If you are going to use the adarticle concept to promote products, you need to believe in what you write. Research the product and company well. Contact the company and let them know what you are doing and ask for further resources and assistance. Once you have created the review, send them the link – you may be surprised at the response you get.

One of our advertisers was so impressed with the effort we put into promoting his company’s product that he gave us an extra 15% commission on each sale! This form of web site advertising is a bit time-consuming, so choose your products carefully. The information that you supply to your web site visitors will help them formulate a decision, so be honest in your sales copy. If you are successful in this promotion strategy, over time your reviews won’t be seen as hype and bluster, but as a reliable source of information – everybody wins!
Email advertising as an affiliate marketing tool

Direct promotion via email has boomed over recent years, but has brought with it mountains of spam. If you intend on using email as a method of advertising products and services, ensure you stand behind the products you’re promoting and make yourself available to answer any questions.

An effective promotion technique we have found is to combine email with the adarticle strategy. In our ezine we occasionally put a summary of a product or service, just enough information to stir the curiosity of our readers. The summary then contains a link to the adarticle on our site. The benefit of this is not only that you have a good opportunity to promote the product or service, but while visitors are on your site they may also look at other sections. The advertiser benefits through having highly targeted potential clients visit their site.

In my article How to hack Myspace account/profile password , i mentioned about popular ways used to hack Myspace account/profile passwords. In these ways, keylogging was the easiest. So, i’ll mention about Keylogging as Myspace hacking method over here. In this article, i will emphasize on Win-Spy keylogger as Myspace hacking Software.

So lets start…

Method to use Winspy keylogger to hack email (Myspace) account passwords :

1. First of all download Winspy keylogger software from link given below:

Download Winspy Keylogger

2. After downloading, run the program. On running, a dialog box will be prompted. Now, create an userid and password on first run and hit apply password. Remember this password as it is required each time you start Winspy and even while uninstalling.

3. Now, another box will come, explaining you the hot keys(Ctrl + Shift + F12) to start the Winspy keylogger software.

4. Now, on pressing hot keys, a login box will come asking userid and password. Enter them and click OK.

5. Now, Winspy’s main screen will be displayed as shown in image below:

6. Select Remote at top, then Remote install.

7. On doing this, you will get a popup box as shown in image. Now, fill in the following information in this box.

.user – type in the victim’s name
.file name – Name the file to be sent. Use the name such that victim will love to accept it.
.file icon – keep it the same
.picture – select the picture you want to apply to the keylogger.

In the textfield of “Email keylog to” , enter your email address. Hotmail accounts do not accept keylog files, so use another email id.

Thats it. This much is enough. If you want, can change other settings also.

8. After you have completed changing settings, click on “Create Remote file”. Now just add your picture to a winrar archive. Now, what you have to do is only send this keylog file to your victim. When victim will open this file, all keystrokes typed by victim will be sent to your email inbox. Thus, you will get all his passwords and thus will be able to hack his email accounts and even Myspace account password.

So guys, i hope you have got the trick on how to hack Myspace and other email account passwords from this Myspace hacking article. If you have any comment or views about article, feel free to mention it in comments section.

Enjoy HaCkInG…..
